CSTC — Electrical Technology — Trade Test Level 2
About This Course
Course purpose
This CSTC course provides a structured learning pathway for Electrical Technology — Trade Test Level 2. It combines instructor-led teaching, practical demonstration, guided activities, applied problem-solving, knowledge checks and a learner evidence portfolio. Intermediate level: plan from a work brief, read specifications, make choices and document checks/corrections with trainer oversight.
Intended learners
For CSTC learners following the Electrical Technology trade-test pathway at Level 2. Learners must complete centre induction, use only authorised equipment/accounts, follow instructions and seek trainer guidance if a task exceeds their competence.
Learning outcomes
- Apply safe work and isolation procedures
- Interpret trade drawings and specifications
- Use tools and materials correctly
- Complete supervised practical tasks to a quality checklist
- Record inspection, test, defect and handover evidence
- Communicate findings and reflect on improvements using accurate records.
Curriculum structure
Five units, ten structured lessons. Every unit includes teaching notes, guided practice, a knowledge check, quality/safety checkpoints and evidence to retain.
- Installation planning and calculations: Load schedules, current estimates, circuit layouts, cable route constraints, material quantities and documented assumptions.
- Protection, earthing and distribution: Fuses, breakers, overload/short-circuit concepts, earthing, bonding, distribution layouts and circuit schedules.
- Lighting, control and motor circuits: Multi-point lighting, accessory circuits, relays/contactors, motor-control diagrams, interlocks and overload protection concepts.
- Testing and fault diagnosis: Visual inspection, approved testing sequence, measurement records, fault classification and safe escalation.
- Installation project and handover: Work packs, quantities, sequencing, quality assurance, defect registers, verification and professional handover.
Delivery approach
- Short instructor explanations and demonstrations before practice.
- Guided exercises using approved equipment, supplied scenarios or safe practice datasets.
- Formative questions and feedback before progression.
- Portfolio evidence appropriate to the trade: worksheets, drawings, test data, production records, samples or service records.
Assessment plan
Observed safe setup, drawing/calculation tasks, supervised practical build, inspection records and an integrated task.
- Diagnostic check of prior knowledge and safety.
- Formative knowledge checks, oral questions, work sheets and practical observation after each unit.
- Integrated capstone task including planning, safe execution, output inspection, correction and handover.
- Formal trade-test and certification decisions must use authorised criteria; completing this online course alone is not a formal TEVETA award.
Resources and equipment
Approved training boards, insulated tools, suitable test meters/leads, cable samples, accessories, diagrams, PPE, checklists and current approved installation references.
Health, safety and responsibilities
Electrical activities must use the instructor-approved training rig and isolation procedure. Trainees must not energise mains equipment or perform statutory testing without authorised supervision. Stop work and notify the instructor if conditions are unsafe, information is missing or a result indicates a safety-critical defect.
Results and progression
Course participation, unit competence and formal examination results are separate records. The results field remains Pending / not supplied until an authorised result is received. Progression requires confirmation of prerequisites and instructor approval.
Curriculum alignment notice
Content provenance: CSTC-developed instructional content; not a verbatim copy or claim of official TEVETA endorsement. Before formal trade-test assessment, the department must map units, outcomes, practical tasks, assessment methods and weighting to the current TEVETA-approved curriculum/chart, relevant standards and current safety requirements.
